Olivia Ontjes pockets Women’s 100m breaststroke gold – YMCA National Championship
Olivia Ontjes of Triangle Area-NC pocketed gold medal of the Women’s 100m breaststroke on last day of the 2012 YMCA National Long Course Championship at Georgia Institute of Technology Aquatics Center on Friday, July 27.
The 15-year-old Ontjes exceeded hopes of her followers by making a significant improvement in her pace in the playoff. Ontjes, who made her way to the final round as second best swimmer, elevated her efforts in the playoff and reached the medal rostrum for
gold medal.
With her alluring efforts, she remained one and a half body length ahead of her following rival and touched the wall for gold medal with the timing of 1 minute and 12.90 seconds.
Her gold claiming effort remained 1.28 seconds ahead of Rachel Stoddard of Somerset Valley NJ, who appeared on the finishing blockade for silver medal by clocking a time of 1 minute and 14.18 seconds.
The second position holder was followed by Kendra Crew of Springfield-OH, who stayed 0.06 seconds apart and stepped on the victory stand for bronze medal by posting a time of 1 minute and 14.24 seconds.
Similarly, Crew was chased by Claire Williams of Triangle Area-NC, who was only 0.02 seconds apart and finished fourth in the discipline by producing a time of 1 minute and 14.26 seconds.
Fifth fastest spot of the race was obtained by Katy Williams of Triangle Area-NC, who suffered a loss of 0.36 seconds and tapped the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 14.62 seconds.
The 17-year-old Williams was trailed by Kristin Filby of Gr. Toledo-OH, who claimed sixth finest spot of the event with the timing of 1 minute and 14.81 seconds.
Seventh position of the race was secured by Jodie Thompson of Fanwood Scotch-NJ, who was 0.04 seconds apart and clocked an effort of 1 minute and 14.85 seconds.
Thompson was followed by Savanna Faulconer of Middle Tyger-SC, who stayed half body length behind and reported a time of 1 minute and 15.24 seconds for eighth position.
In addition, Ontjes expressed contentment over her victory in the 100m discipline at the prize ceremony of the tournament.
