Olivia Rogowska, Stephanie Dubois progress to the quarterfinals – Van Open 2011 CH
Australian qualifier, Olivia Rogowska came back from a set and break down to win her second round match against the fifth-seeded Misaki Doi of Japan at the Hollyburn Country
Club in Vancouver with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 score line.
For a set and a half, Doi looked as though she would defeat the Australian qualifier in easy straight sets, who served poorly, returned even worse and was not even particularly
good off the baseline. Her first service game was a hopeless effort and Doi clinched the quick lead.
Although Rogowska had the chance to break back later in the opening set, Doi completely justified her top billing and successfully managed to serve her way out of trouble
in the opening set.
The second set did not bring any good luck for the Australian at first and she got into trouble early in the second set as well. With her first serve letting her down, Doi
managed to work her way into another Rogowska service game and secured the early lead to go 2-0 in the second set.
However, as the second set wore on, Rogowska dug her heels in and began to hit better and better. The Australian qualifier had been having difficulty with Doi’s fiery serve,
but as expected, she was opportunistic when she finally began to find the range of her forehands. That single well-played return game, resulting in the break back, gave the Australian qualifier the entire boost she needed to win the match against the Japanese
fifth seed.
From that point on, Doi did not have the spark in her game that she had in the first set and as the Australian found her rhythm in the decider, she brilliantly forced the
Japanese behind the baseline, clinching the final set with a breadstick win.
She now moves on into the quarterfinals where she mill meet Julia Glushko of Israel, who beat Canada’s Sharon Fichman to reach this far.
Also, Stephanie Dubois of Canada secured her straight sets win to progress to the quarterfinals of the Vancouver Open 2011.
The Canadian seventh seed needed one hour and five minutes to brush aside Kazakh’s Yaroslava Shvedova 6-4, 6-0 at Hollyburn Country Club.
It was a far more convincing display of tennis from Dubois than any other player during the day, who showed no signs of the early nerves and concluded her lop-sided victory
in two sets.
She raced out to a 5-4 lead in the opener and was hardly troubled thereafter by her Kazakh opponent, who could not offer any valiant resistance and lost the second set with
a bagel.
By virtue of her straight sets victory against the Kazakh, Dubois has successfully entered the quarterfinals where she will face Julia Cohen of America.
