Olivia Rogowska downs Elitsa Kostova in the opening round – Malaysian Open 2012
World number 127, Olivia Rogowska, squashed the 149th ranked Bulgarian, Elitsa Kostova, in the opening round clash of the BMW Malaysian Open. On Monday, both contenders locked horns at the hard courts of Kuala Lumpur and battled for 74 minutes before the Aussie tennis professional gobbled up the win in straight sets 6-4, 6-0.
The match kicked-off in emphatic fashion with the Aussie starlet breaking her opponent’s serve right away and leading 2-0 by the end of the first two games. The Bulgarian fought back into the contest with a successful and a breakthrough; levelling the scores at 2-2.
A swap of breakpoints in the sixth and seventh game kept the scores together at 4-4.. It was crucial for both players to hang on to their respective serve games but Kostova couldn’t absorb the pressure and gifted the breakpoint to her opponent. Rogowska masterfully capitalized on to that opportunity and registered a successful serve hold to take the set.
The score line for the second set is enough to highlight the happenings. It was a bagel for the Aussie star who wasted no opportunity to pound her opponent. She was terrific with her forceful forehand and backhand returns especially her cross-court winners were a treat to watch. She mixed up her game with few drop shots that left no chance for her opponent to settle and make a comeback.
With three successive breakthroughs and successful serve holds at her end, Rogowska successfully dodged the inferior ranked Bulgarian to advance into the next stage of the tournament. She awaits the victorious participant between, seventh seed Jelena Dokic and Kristina Mladenovic, to contest in the second round.
Other opening round winner on Monday include the likes of fifth seed Croatian contender, Petra Matric, who defeated the 138th ranked Japanese contestant, Erika Sema, in a gruelling three-setter.
Four qualifiers that successfully defeated their opponents to advance into the main round of the contest include Su-Wei Hsieh, Karolina Pliskova, Kristyna Pliskova, Nudnida Luangnam.
Agnieszka Radwanska is the top seed player who was crowned champion in Dubai Duty Free Championships on Saturday.
