Olivia Smoliga captures Women’s 100m backstroke gold - FINA Swimming Championships (25m)
Olivia Smoliga of USA captured gold medal of the Women’s 100m breaststroke on second day of the 2012 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) at Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul, Turkey, on Thursday, December 13.
Smoliga demonstrated her gruelling efforts in the event as she went on a rampage in the playoff and secured the title. With her alluring efforts in the playoff, she faced little competition from the fastest qualifying swimmer, Mie Oestergaard Nelsen of Denmark,
and occupied gold medal.
Smoliga remained half a body length ahead of her closest swimmer as she tapped the wall with the timing of 56.64 seconds.
The champion was followed by Nielsen, who stayed 0.43 seconds apart and surfaced on the finishing end for silver medal by clocking a time of 57.07 seconds.
The silver medallist was traced by Simona Baumrtova of Czech Republic, who stayed 0.11 seconds behind and completed her race in third place by touching the wall with the timing of 57.18 seconds.
Fourth fastest spot of the event was obtained by Rachel Goh of Australia, who was 0.13 seconds apart and touched the wall with the timing of 57.31 seconds.
Similarly, Goh was chased by Georgia Davies of Great Britain, who stayed 0.01 seconds apart and transpired on the finishing end for fifth place by reporting an effort of 57.32 seconds.
Sixth spot of the event was obtained by Grace Loh of Australia, who stayed 0.02 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and tapped the wall with an effort of 57.34 seconds.
The Australian swimmer was chased by Daryna Zevina of Ukraine, who stayed 0.33 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and hit the wall with an effort of 57.67 seconds.
Eighth spot of the race was obtained by Duane da Rocha Marce of Spain, who was nearly half body length behind and concluded her swim in a time of 58.14 seconds.
In addition, Smoliga was extremely delighted with her gold finish in the race and stated that she would try her best to continue the same in future. Furthermore, the championship will conclude on December 16 after the completion of all planned events.
