Olivier Sajous ousts Wil Spencer in the second round qualies – Atlanta Tennis Championships 2011
24-year-old Olivier Sajous of Haiti stood victorious against the American wildcard, Wil Spencer, in the second round of the qualifying draws of Atlanta Tennis Championships in Atlanta, the United States, on Sunday afternoon.
The exciting contest lasted for one hour and forty eight minutes, before Sajous finally overcame the American in straight sets 6-4, 7-5, to get in to the final round qualifiers of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World
Tour 250 tournament.
The unseeded Sajous exhibited his brilliant hard-court tennis skills to take down the resilient Spencer in straight sets after a stiff contest. The American fought well throughout the contest but it was just the matter of time
that he couldn’t convert most of his opportunities in the match to finish on the losing side in the end.
Enthralling tennis was witnessed throughout the contest, with the momentum oscillating continuously in the game. Sajous took off the opener in an aggressive fashion and stung an early serve break in the third game, only to be broken
in the very next game by the brilliance of Spencer. His 65 per cent precise serve earned him 15 out of 20 first serve points in the opening set, while the American secured 10 points to remain on the back foot.
A regular break was seen after the early trade of break points, taking the scores to 4-4. Sajous shifted the gears to nail a crucial second serve break to reach 5-4, serving for the set. He faced no real trouble in serving out
of the first serve at 6-4, getting a one-set lead in the competition.
More intense tennis was observed in the following set, as Spencer toiled very hard to make a comeback in the contest. Sajous struck early once again with a serve break to lead 2-0, after winning a seven-deuce game. a series of
serve breaks was witnessed at 3-2, with Sajous striking two and Spencer cracking one break point to take the scores to 5-5.
It appeared as if the set was well on its way to a tie breaker round but an all-important serve break from Sajous gave him an opportunity to wrap up his straight sets victory at 6-5. Sajous served out of the match at 7-5 to advance
to the final qualifying round of Atlanta Tennis Championships, where he will face the third seed, Yuichi Sugita from Japan, for a place in the main draws of the tournament. The Japanese took down Haydn Lewis of Barbados in the second round to reach the qualifying
competition on Sunday as well.
