http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Somerset-c843: Friends Life T20
A sensational bowling performance from Ollie Rayner guided Sussex to a victory over Somerset by four wickets, in a match of the Friends Life T20, at the County Ground, Hove, in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013, on Tuesday, June 14, 2011.
The visitors were bowled out for 90 runs in 17.2 overs and were unable to defend the total. However, the chase didn’t prove to be an easy one for Sussex, as the team lost six wickets in the process.
The home team’s skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Murray-William-Goodwin-c78070, opted to field first after winning the toss. The pitch had some moisture beneath it and the batsmen were expected to have a hard time, especially against the new ball.
Somerset opened the innings with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Marcus-Trescothick-c1898. Both players had represented England in international cricket and had plenty of experience to cope with difficult conditions.
However, Kieswetter failed to make an impression and was sent back to the pavilion after adding just three runs to the total from seven deliveries. He was followed by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Peter-David-Trego-c81582, who failed to open his account.
South Africa’s all-rounder, Roelof http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graham-Robert-Cowdrey-c60631 der Merwe, gave some support to his captain, as the pair collected 24 runs for the third wicket partnership.
However, Trescothick failed to carry onto the start he got to his innings and was dismissed for 33 runs off 23 balls. He struck two fours and three sixes and looked the most comfortable batsmen in the middle.
The fall of Somerset’s skipper saw a collapse for the team, as wickets started to tumble. Van der Merwe got out after scoring 14 runs and lower-order batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Murali-Kartik-c78034, managed 19 runs towards the end of the innings, guiding his side’s total to 90.
Sussex posses a very strong bowling attack and they proved it yet again in yesterday’s game. Rayner was in devastating form, picking up a five-wicket haul for his team. He got terrific support from Pakistan’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rana-Naved-ul-Hasan-c83909, who grabbed a couple of
wickets in the match.
The hosts didn’t get off to an ideal start either, as they lost three quick wickets for just 23 runs on the board.
However, a 32-run stand between New Zealand’s, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lou-Vincent-c73143 and Goodwin steadied the innings for Sussex. They scored 16 and 27 in their respective innings before getting out.
An unbeaten seven and four from Naved-ul-Hasan and Rayner guided Sussex to a four-wicket victory in the end. The target was achieved in the 18th over.
The Somerset bowlers fought hard, but failed to defend the low target set by their batsmen. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Steve-Kirby-c2577 and van der Merwe took a couple of wickets each in the match and didn’t give away too many runs in the match.
