Ollie le Roux slams John Smit’s leadership in Tri-Nations opener – Rugby news
Former Springboks player, Ollie le Roux, has criticised the poor captaincy of John Smit during the South Africans first match of the Tri-Nations against the Wallabies. Roux asked the Springboks coach, Peter de Villiers, to get rid of Smit before Rugby World
Cup 2011. Roux made these comments on July 25 after the humiliating defeat by the Wallabies on July 23. The Tri-Nations opener proved an easy target for the Wallabies as they thumped the South Africans by a large difference of 39-20.
Talking to journalists, the ex-South African player targeted the decision of De Villiers to keep Smit as the skipper of the team and said the captain had failed to motivate the team and his play was simply dreadful. The former prop also bashed some other
senior players in the South African lines and said that they all played terribly bad in the match.
The Wallabies dominated the young South African side from the first minute of the match and had not given them any opportunity to make a comeback into the match. The Springboks only showed some aggression in the match during the later part of the game when
the defeat was clear as day light. They managed to score a few points in the last minutes to grab a respectable loss in Sydney.
Ollie le Roux told reporters that, “Peter de Villiers again showed that he is not the kind of coach that can get a team to gel. Hopefully things go better when the guys at home return to the team. John Smit was dreadful. I can't think how one could even
contemplate taking him to the World Cup.”
Talking about the next match of the Springboks against the All Blacks, Roux warned his side to avoid a bad show on July 30. He said that, “The All Blacks are going to be good. The Boks will get a huge hiding if they perform badly.”
The Springboks will take on the All Blacks on July 30 in Wellington in their next clash of Tri-Nations Cup.
