Olympiakos men’s volleyball team defeats Iraklis by 3-2 – Volleyball news
Volleyball is a sport in which teams are able to show individual skill as well as reap the benefits of playing as a team. Where many matches have been won on the basis of a couple of excellent players, teams that are well coordinated but do not feature any
great performers have also had high rates of success.
One such team that has been able to step up and surprise their peers and fans is the Olympiakos men’s volleyball team. They were able to defeat Iraklis in a match that took five long and gruelling sets to reach its close. Despite being categorized as the
underdogs, Olympiakos was able to earn themselves a hard fought win at 3-2.
By the time that Olympiakos was celebrating their victory with leaps of joy and a disappointed Iraklis team was heading out of the courts with heads hung low, the scoreboard read as 17-25, 25-21, 25-18, 28-30 and 15-10.
Olympiakos has sent a wake call to the rest of the teams in the Volley League by winning a tough game in a tough environment. Even though Iraklis was playing in their home ground, they were unable to utilise that additional advantage to their favour as they
succumbed to the superior play of Olympiakos.
After their recent win, the Reds have secured themselves a leading position in the final series of the Volleyball League.
The first set of the match did not start off well for Olympiakos as they were not able to come into form. Iraklis, who were playing in their home ground, had a much easier time securing themselves a dominating position in the opening set of the game.
Consequently, it was not hard for Iraklis to take the lead early on and keep the pressure on the Reds for most part of the match. Olympiakos was not able to close in the gap as Iraklis kept extending their advantage until they had bagged the first set of
the game at 25-17.
Despite having lost so decisively to their opponents in the initial set, Olympiakos was able to rally together and step up their game considerably in the second set of the match. The Reds fought hard to gain control and they were bitterly contested by Iraklis.
What followed was a tug of between two teams that were playing at their best. However, the team that was able to be the better one in the second round was Olympiakos. They took the second set of the game at 25-21.
After gaining confidence by winning the second set, Olympiakos was all set to take the third one too. Eventually, they pulled another win at 25-18.
Iraklis took the fourth one at 30-28, but the final set rested with Olympiakos at 15-10.
The match was the first one in a best of five series and the second one is scheduled to take place today.
