Olympic Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Question

Are there any plans or any talk about making Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and olympic event? Is it something they've even considered or has it been brought to the attention of the olympic committee for consideration? Judo and wrestling are in there so why not BJJ?

No offense Tiffany B but you are a little prejudiced. I do not think that Bushido, or anyone that knows for that matter, will say that BJJ is not effective, and is not one of the more popular styles in the UFC, but it is obviously not the best, because in reality, no matter how much the BJJ nuts might want it, there is no best.

BJJ people regurly get their A**** handed to them in the UFC. Take Matt Hughes (wrestling background) against Royce Gracie. It is not the style it is the fighter. Also compared with other Martial Arts BJJ has no where near as many people training it. There are a lot of Fan Boys and Posers though.

Problems I see with BJJ being in the olympics is that:

1) There are other styles and sports that have been waiting a lot longer.

2) In order to be a Olympic sport, it must be united, with one set of rules, one governing body, actual world championships, etc. I do not see the Gracie's and their huge immense ego's ever allowing something like that where they do not have control over it.

Just because BJJ fits you, doesn't mean it fits everybody, and there are situations where it would not work. BJJ don't seem to havea concept that sometimes there are more then one attacker, and sometimes they have weapons. I doubt they ever will.

BJJ isn't an international sport.  As the name suggests, it's a Brazilian sport.  Now bringing Pankration back, I'd be for that - especially if they made the politicians fight first.

I really don't know, maybe because it is not widely used or known about.  I'd watch it.  They are very specific when it comes to labeling things as "sport" however,  I don't believe I would call Judo a "sport", so beats me.

theres a lot better styles that have been around longer than bjj,and have tried to get into the olypics and failed.so NO!.

EDIT.tiffany b i have no doubt i would have forgotten more about martial arts than you'll  ever know and if you do some research you'll find my answer is right and while your at it you might like to research the difference between bjj an jj,and you might also like to read the question again and reply to it rather than replying to my answer?

Its really not that popular in the world compared to those. Its more grappling than fighting anyway. Not entertaining I guess.

Wrong below poster you're thinking of something else. They are two different things. One is dancing the other is grappling.

Bushido your are wrong. There is no style of martial arts better than jiu jitsu. take the ufc for example the heavyweight champion, middleweight champion, welterweight champion, and lightweight champion are all jiu jitsu black belts. The ufc which was originally created as a way to showcase bjj and is much more popular than boxing. I recently competed at the bjj world championship. My first match I competed against an American the second a Brazilian and the third was a gentleman from japan. Thus proving ibjj to be a global sport three matches and three continents represented. The fact is you would probable be hard pressed to find a sport in the Olympics more popular than jiu jitsu.

Partly because BJJ is essentially a subset of Judo.  It was derived from Judo and is basically just Judo matwork, with a few takedowns, and practiced to the point that a BJJ practitioner is a grappling expert.

BJJ is also not currently recognized as a sport by the IOC, so it has a long way to go.  A sport is recognized when there is a single international federation that oversees the rules and tournaments.  It also requires that there be World Championships in that sport.

It also must be added into the Olympics by the IOC.  There are more than a dozen sports (Including such classics as Chess and Bridge, and no I'm not making this up) that have been trying to gain entry into the Olympics for years, and they are currently right up against the cap (They are two sports short because Baseball and Softball were recently eliminated).  BJJ has a long way to go and isn't going to get in any time soon.
