Olympic Champion, Mariel Zagunis leading in Women’s Sabre: Fencing News
It is not too difficult for the Olympic Champion, Mariel Zagunis to stand over at the top of the world. As usual, the 2010 World Champion, Zagunis is leading the entire super Women’s Sabre Fencers due to her brawny fencing capabilities. According to FIE
World Ranking for Sabre Women, Zagunis is leading the 2010-11 ranking with 320 points.
Zagunis is two times Olympic Champion, two times World Champion and one time silver medallist at World Championship. From 2003 to until now, she continues to stand in top-5 list in Women’s Sabre world standings. Moreover, Zagunis is repeatedly standing first
in Sabre World Rankings since 2009.
During the year of 2010-11, she participated in ten events where she was always listed in top 10 Sabre fencers. She has won four gold medals, one silver and three bronze medals during 2010-11. On April 3, 2011, when FIE announced the current year’s rankings
first time, Zagunis was on the top with 363 points. Two events including Sabre Women’s World Cup Bologna and Sabre Grand Prix Cup Tianjin were conducted. During Bologna World Cup on May 6, Zagunis dropped in the table-16 as the number nine seed, while she
was dropped as number five seed in the quarter-final during Tianjin Grand Prix on May 21. Although it was not a good performance by Zagunis, but still she is standing on the top of the world.
Russian Sophia Velikaia was at third place on April 1. However, after her excellent performance in Tianjin and Bologna events, she jumped upward at second place dropping Ukrainian Olga Kharlan. Sophia is now second in the Sabre World Standings with 251 points.
