Olympic Champion Lin Dan wins his fifth All England Open Title – Badminton news
China’s top player and ruling Olympic Champion Lin Dan proved that he is the best ever shuttler in the arena of badminton as he won his fifth title at All England Open Premier Super Series in England, on Sunday, March 11.
In the final match, the second seed Lin did not face much trouble in beating the World Number One Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia, who quit playing in the second set because of an injury in his right shoulder.
Lin was also sympathetic over the condition of Chong Wei who was suffered with an injury at a crucial time when he was bidding to win his third All England Open title in a row.
After the match Lin appreciated his opponent by saying, “He did give a good fight in the first game despite his condition. I know that this injury is not serious and I am looking forward to meeting him again at the Olympic Games.”
In the first game, both players put up wonderful show of fast and top quality badminton and entertained the packed indoor arena at Birmingham, England.
Lin was dictating the pace of rallies while Chong Wei was executing wonderful defensive shots. The score remained equal until both players reached at 10-10.
Until the break in the opening set, Lin was slightly ahead of Chong Wei on the score board by reaching at 11-10.
The Chinese was leading the game in second half of first set and reached at 15-12 when Chong Wei called the doctor because his shoulder injury started to get aggravated.
After taking a little medication, he resumed playing but visibly failed to play his normal game. He could not execute smashes, which is his strongest weapon in the court.
He failed to swing his arm freely that prevented him to hit the bird hard and he had to rely on playing half-court game.
On the other hand, Lin did not drop his speed and remained successful in taking the first set with a close margin of 21-19.
In the second set, Lin was leading on the score board and reached at 6-2 when Chong Wei stopped playing because his injury forced him to quit.
Lin emerged as the winner after the withdrawal of Chong Wei with a concluding 21-19 and 6-2 margin on the score board.
