Olympic Games 2012; the race to glory begins! – Tennis Special
Top seeded, Roger Federer could combat Andy Murray this Olympics’ final, refreshing the memory of the Wimbledon final showdown. The London Olympics first round draws has set the seeded players to face tough competition ever since
the beginning of the event.
Federer is the most legitimate contender for the gold medal. He is back in form to reclaim his number one spot after his 17th Grand Slam Championship. By far, the world’s number one has never tasted the flavour of the
gold medal in the Olympics single.
The reigning top ranked Swiss has to face Alejandro Falla in the first round. The Colombian initially gave him a tough time at 2010 Wimbledon Championships but eventually lost by 7-5, 6-4, 4-6, 6-7, 0-6. Federer maintains an absolute
head-to-head record of 5-0 against the underdog.
The Serb, Novak Djokovic, is the defending bronze champions this Olympics. The former world number one commenced this year with an ideal start, attaining the top seeds in all the championships. He lost at the hands of the Swiss
professional at the Wimbledon semi finals, 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 3-6 and resultantly got second seeded for the London Games.
Djokovic will be facing the Italian Fabio Fognini. In this match, like before the world number two might give the Italian a straight set defeat. He is in the same set of draw as the British number one, Andy Murray and expected
to take on each other at the Olympics semi-finals. The former world number one takes a head on lead by 8-5 but the encounter between the two will surely be the most entertaining match of the Great Games.
The third seed, Murray, will have to compete against the defending gold medallist in doubles category, Stanislas Wawrinka in the opening match. For the Scot, victory does not seem so easy because the Swiss wants to secure his former
spot in the world Top-10.
In women’s singles, the top seed Victoria Azarenka will contest against the 79thranked underdog, Irina-Camelia Begu in the first round and assumed to score effortless straight set victory. However, she will face a tough
competition against the former number one, Serena Williams. The veteran has a straight victory record of 8-1 and hopeful like before to secure a straight set victory in the Olympics semi-finals.
Serena runs into a tough battle against the Serbian Jelena Jankovic in the first round. However, the American’s fifth Wimbledon title gives her the assurance to win the Olympic gold.
Neither of the finalists, in the singles category, is returning to defend their previous titles. After Rafael Nadal’s withdrawal from the Olympics the courts of the All-England- Club is ready for the Swiss legend to strengthen
his number one spot.
Similarly, in the women’s category the former gold medallist retirement increased Williams’ morale. Giving her an edge by being the most experienced player amongst all the other sports stars.
The unveiled draws show the strongest struggle for the gold title in the singles category, with the best of the best professionals descending on the grass courts of Wimbledon to claim glory.
