How does the show jumping portion of the modern pentathlon differ from regular olympic show jumping, if at all?

  1. In modern pentathlon, the riders 'catch ride' over the course. That means they ride a horse they have never been on before. As a result, the course is less technical than show jumping.

  2. There are two additional obstacles in a pentathlon jumping course:  a slip rail and a gate.  For the gate, it's a regular farm gate that you have to open while mounted, go through and close behind you.  The slip rail is a fence board that slides over to create a gate.  You open this one unmounted, lead the horse through then re-build the fence.

You can find out the jumping rules, but not the olympic heights by reading the jumping portion of the U.S. Pony Club's Tetrathlon rulebook.  Tetrathlon is the same but minus the fencing.  http://tetrathlon.ponyclub.org/

There is also a link to the Pentathlon:

  3. The jumps are smaller, and I believe there is only one round, instead of the multiple rounds for show jumping.

  4. Well, it is actually called modern show jumping

  5. Umm well in regular show jumping, the horse is the riders (usually) and the rider knows the horse well & has a relationship with it....with the pentathlon...the riders draw horses they have never ridden before & have to jump on them...this is really difficult because they dont know the horse AT ALL...hence making it significantly harder than normal show jumping...from a rider's perspective
