Olympic champion Oscar De La Hoya facing drug abuse charges – Boxing news
Olympic champion Oscar De La Hoya is facing probably one of the biggest battles of his life against drug abuse.
The 38-year-old American De La Hoya, who has won 39 fights with 30 knockouts, has recently entered a rehabilitation clinic somewhere in California.
It looked a rumour at first but now it has been confirmed by Richard Schaefer, who helped in building the Golden Boy Empire.
Schaefer told the media Saturday evening in Montreal that it was sad but true. He added, “He is my friend and I wish him well. I’m sure that all the fans are joining me in wishing him the best.”
De La Hoya, who retired from the world of boxing in 2008 following a big loss to Manny Pacquiao, has also admitted his flaws.
He said in a statement, “After doing an honest evaluation of myself, I recognize that there are certain issues that I need to work on. Like everyone, I have my flaws, and I do not want to be one of those people that is afraid to admit and address those flaws.”
“Throughout my career and my life, I have always met all challenges head-on, and this is no different. I am confident that with the support of my family and friends, I will become a stronger, healthier person,” he added.
De La Hoya, who is still the undisputed pay-per-view king, according to a leading sports website, has asked for privacy.
There are no confirmations from the officials as of yet on the nature of the substance abuse. However, a website has revealed that it might be cocaine.
A popular boxing website claimed that they have been receiving various reports from different sources. The website mentioned that the future Hall of Famer De La Hoya has been dealing with a cocaine problem since long.
The website however on the same note said that boxing’s Golden Boy De La Hoya was looking for a good treatment, as he wanted to make a comeback by fixing the issue.
