Question:

Olympic event-- rhythmic gymnastics?

Hi everybody. I admit I didn't watch too much of the Olympics, but I caught some of the rhythmic gymnastics the other night. Not to hurt anybody's feelings, but why is that an Olympic sport? I gladly admit it was impressive and fun to watch, but it looked like circus acrobats or a cheerleader routine more than an actual sport. So what do you think--does this really deserve to be an Olympic event? Or are the Olympics resorting to 'filler' to boost ratings, increase the number of participants, and maybe just get more girls in, in 'soft' events that don't really have objective scoring standards?

  1. The same could be said of synchronized swimming! Pretty to watch but is it really a "sport"? LOL!!

  2. I played rugby...so I don't understand why the Olympics doesn't add that sport. Obviously both genders already play it. Rhythmic gymnastics puts me to sleep. I think it is one of the most ridiculous excuses for a "sport" next to ping-pong. Might as well have Olympic cheerleading. I mean...flitting a ribbon around is a "sport"?! C'mon...that is like the grown up version of running around with sparklers. Ooh, there is the next Olympic sport...Sparkler dancing.

And they get rid of baseball and softball which are actual sports. Makes no kinda sense to me...

  3. rhythmic gymnastics is ballet and gymnastics in one.

so ask yourself, is ballet and gymnastics a sport?

  4. Of course it is a sport. Just like artistic gymnastics, it requires a lot of skills and training.

  5. i thing regular gymnastics is better lol rhythmic is nice to listen.

beach volleyball, the women kind, are nice

  6. Yeah, I think it should be an event. Of course I had similar thoughts like anyone that it shouldn't be until I watched a little more closely and some of the better athletes compete. Excellence is excellence at any venue or event. When I was a boy though someone took me to a visiting demonstration meet and we didn't know what we were getting into. It was really boring and we left early to go to the ice cream shop instead. As an adult male, I find it a little more interesting than as a boy, and of course the level is so much higher at the Olympics.

You know, live and let live. The Olympics is much much bigger than America, and the world enjoys some things that America doesn't. Look at it as a chance every four years to see a few events you never get a chance to see in your home country.

NBC probably showed it at the request of the IOC or gymnastics federation to try and increase its popularity here.

  7. I agree with you

  8. I agree. Filler is exactly what it is. It's very unnecessary as well as the syncronized diving. Although I will admit that I can't do that, and they look very skillful at what they do, to call it an "Olympic event" is a bit ridiculous to me.
