Olympic golf course designer about to be announced – Golf News
The International Olympic Committee reached Rio de Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday for a three-day trip. The purpose of the trip was to discuss the preparations needed in the city for the upcoming Olympics in 2016.
Alongside, the announcement of the winner of the golf course designing contest was to be made. On December 2, 2011, a total of eight golf course designer firms were shortlisted.
These were: Gary Player Design, Greg Norman Golf Course Design, Hanse Golf Design, Hawtree Ltd., Nicklaus Design, Renaissance Golf, Robert Trent Jones II and Thomson-Perret Golf Course Architects.
Jack Nicklaus decided to team up with Annika Sorenstam, whereas Greg Norman partnered with Lorena Ochoa for their projects.
It is IOC’s first visit of the year and fifth overall since the city was picked to host the Olympics.
The commission is led by Nawal El Moutawakel and Gilbert Felli is performing his duties as Executive Director in the commission.
The IOC members are scheduled to meet Rio de Janeiro organizing committee on Wednesday, where they will discuss and visit some of the possible Olympic venues.
Following the visit to the venues, the local organizers will finally make the announcement of the designer firm that will be given the contract of the first Olympic golf course in the last 100 years.
The game of golf was excluded from Olympics since 1904 St. Louis Olympics, which hosted the golf for the last time.
However, with the help of many golf officials and game lovers, the Olympic committee decided last year to reinstate the game and make it a permanent part of the schedule.
According to the officials, they invited all the finalists to attend the announcement ceremony. However, it is not yet confirmed whether the participants have confirmed their participation.
Many golf experts praised the idea of adding the sport to Olympics, as it will increase the level of interest about the game among people from different parts of the world.
However, the final confirmation of making the game as a permanent part of Olympics schedule is based on the voting to be done in 2017 when the golf officials will again meet and decide the future of golf.
