My parents and I are having trouble finding the name of the female Olympic gymnast who, during either a floor routine or a vault, broke her ankle (or leg?) but continued on to win a medal despite her injury.

I know this is sort of vague, but we're not sure of the details. We're looking for her name, possibly an article? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

  1. I think it was one of the USA team during the Los Angelos Games in 1984 competition. Begin your search there.

  2. The guy who said Kerri Shrug is right.  SNL parodied her also, but she was one of the big heroes of the 1996 games. The Wheaties box from the time shows the whole US women's team with Kerri in an immobilizer (temporary cast-like device).  You might be interested also that a Japanese male gymnast, Shun Fujimoto, broke his kneecap but instead of quitting went on to compete and do the rings.  One commentator, a gymnast, said that he couldn't figure out why Mr. Fujimoto didn't scream or cry in pain when landing on that leg with the broken kneecap.  THe Japanese team went on to win the gold in men's team gymnastics (1976 Montreal games).  Chelsie Memmel (USA) in the 2008 games did her parallel bars routine with a broken ankle.

  3. kerri strug 1996 olympics

  4. Kerri Strug competed on a sprained her ankle on her first vault in 1996 Olympics in the Team Final, then on her 2nd vault she made it worse, but did NOT break it. She did not compete after that though, she was out of AA and Event finals.

This year 2008, Chellsie Memmel had a broken ankle going into the Games (she did it at the Ranch in training) and competed on Bars anyway. Only she was supposed to do all 4 events in Team Comp, but could not.

in 2000 a Canadian gymnast broke her ankle on floor and had to stop mid-way through her routine.

In 1988 another Canadian broke her leg on Floor but continued to finish her routine but had to withdraw from Vault. Lori Strong was her name.
