Olympic marathon champion Samuel Wanjiru falls to his death – Athletics News
The 24-year-old Olympic marathon champion Samuel Wanjiru reportedly jumped out from the second floor balcony of his house and died after suffering severe injuries on May 15.
Wanjiru was a long distance sprinter of Kenya and has broken the world record in the half marathon at the age of 18. He broke the 20km road running record and improved half marathon record by more than twenty seconds in 2007. Wanjiru won the gold medal at
the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and became the first Kenyan to win gold in a marathon at the Olympics.
According to police, the Kenyan athlete had deliberately jumped out of his balcony in Nyahururu, a town in the Rift Valley, which is hundred miles away towards northwest from the capital Nairobi.
As per sources, it was the time of 1:00 am on Monday when Wanjiru leapt. The local policemen, Jaspher Ombati, stated that Wanjiru had some internal injuries after the leap due to which he died. A doctor of a nearby hospital has confirmed his death.
After the doctor’s confirmation Ombati said, "I can confirm that Wanjiru is dead. It is not yet clear whether it was a suicide or if he jumped out of rage, or what caused him to fall to the ground. He jumped from his first floor balcony to the ground. He
was bleeding from the nose and the mouth, and may have suffered internal injuries."
Moreover, the initial investigation of the police says that it might be the case of a love triangle as Wanjiru’s wife Triza Njeri said that she found Wanjiru in his bedroom with a lady after she locked the door and rushed out. Samuel then jumped out from
the balcony.
The police officer, Ombati said Njeri and the other lady are under investigation. Whereas in last December, a charge was registered in court by Njeri that Wanjiru was threatened to kill her and the illegal possession of an AK-47 assault rifle, but later
on, the case was dismissed by Njeri, as per reconciliation.
Early in this year, Wanjiru had an accident in a car after which he could not participate in April at the Virgin London Marathon.
