Olympic mascots manufactured by poorly paid workers – London Olympics 2012
There have been allegations made against the London Organising Committee for Olympic Games recently that the mascots made for the London 2012 Olympic Games come from a factory in China where the working conditions are below standard.
The allegations indicate that the factory in China is paying its workers minimal wages for the production of the mascots of the Olympic Games named Wenlock and Mandeville. These two mascots are the official mascots of the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic
Games.
The allegations hold both the LOCOG as well as Golden Bear responsible for being involved with extracting labour from workers at below standard conditions. Golden Bear is the company responsible for producing the official mascots for the Olympic Games.
According to the allegations made against the LOCOG as well as the Golden Bear, the workers who are involved in the production of the mascots work for more than 11 hours each day. The per hour wages that are allocated to these Chinese workers are 26 pence,
which equates to be 40 US cents and 31 euro cents.
A spokesman of the London 2012 Olympic Games expressed the stance of the LOCOG by giving the following statements, “We have asked our independent monitor to carry out a comprehensive investigation and review of these allegations. The outcome of this investigation
will be made public as soon as it is concluded. We have contacted all of our licensees to reiterate to them the importance we place on the sustainable sourcing code they have each signed up to.”
In response to the allegations made Golden Bear has stated that it is investigate the matter thoroughly in order to determine whether the workers of the Olympic Games mascots were paid minimally or not.
However, Golden Bear also affirmed that the factory that has come to the lime light has cleared all inspections that were conducted by the International Council of Toy Industries (ICTI).
The upcoming Olympic Games that are scheduled to take place in the city of London for the third time in the history of the capital of England are dated to start from July 27, 2012.
