Olympic standings of men’s volleyball teams unveiled – Volleyball News
The 2012 Men’s Olympic Volleyball Tournament rounded off on Sunday, August 12 in London. A total of 12 teams were on board to vie for the Olympic title. The Earls Court provided the backdrop for breath-taking performances, while international audience witnessed
the action.
At the end of the campaign, Russia, Brazil, and Italy secured the top three positions. The final standings of the teams are as followed:
Russia - Gold
Brazil - Silver
Italy – Bronze
Bulgaria
Argentina
Germany
Poland
USA
Australia
Serbia
Great Britain - Hosts
Tunisia
The Olympic action started out with the preliminary round, where each team got to play five matches. Top eight teams of the tournament advanced to the quarterfinals whereas the rest got disqualified. Next up, Russia, Bulgaria, Brazil, and Italy clawed their
way to the ‘final four’ stage of the tournament. Finally, Brazil became the real highlight of the competition after claiming the gold medal victory.
The tournament also created a great opportunity for hosts GB team to catch the limelight. However, the Britons failed to profit from the familiar conditions. Local team played a total of five matches in the preliminary round-robin and finished with devastating
0-5 record. They could not create a chance of celebration for local fans. Nonetheless, all the Olympic matches drew scores of fans in the sports arena.
Sergey Tetyukhin, who was part of the dynamic Russia squad that settled for gold medal victory, shared his views in the following manner: “It’s hard for me to speak. Emotions are overwhelming me. It was a hard match. I think that those people that did not
believe in us, they turned their back and went away after the second set, but those who trusted, they are the most valuable. I think we have shown our courageous character.”
Likewise, Brazilian Sergio Santos regretted the loss in the final match and commented: “It’s unexplainable. We knew it was going to be difficult, we can’t believe it. Losing is part of it but the way we did is even harder to accept. We are going to have
Olympic heroes in Rio (de Janeiro, Brazil).”
All in the all the Olympic men’s volleyball tournament turned out to be a huge success.
