After watching all the 2008 Olympic swimming events, I seem to remember a past Olympics where a male swimmer from a small country swam in a qualifying round and struggled home, finishing way behind the rest of the field. Although he had no chance of advancing, I remember the crowd was cheering him on just because he was doing his best and was participating in the Olympics. Does anybody remember which Olympics this was and who the swimmer was?

  1. it was Sydney 2000.

his name is Eric Moussambani (nicknamed Eric the Eel)

Kind of reminded us in the UK of Eddie 'the Eagle' Edwards who came last in the ski jumping in the 1988 winter olympics.

there was also  Paula Barila Bolopa, who competed in the women's 50 metres freestyle event who was also from Equatorial Guinea in the same olympics.
