Olympic torch to shine in Dublin
It has been recently revealed that the city of Dublin has been added to the route of the Olympic Torch Rally that is going to take place on May 19th of next year. The rally for the London 2012 Olympic Games is going to last a period of 70 days
and end on the July 27th, with the cauldron being lit at the Olympic venue.
Other than Dublin, a total of 1,018 locations have already been finalised through which the Olympic torch will make its way. These places have been chosen in such a way that all of England is covered in the rally. Dublin now makes the only exception where
the Olympic torch will find itself out of the United Kingdom.
The final touches to the decision to include Dublin in the Olympic Games was made by the International Olympic Committee as it met in its executive board meeting that took place in Lausanne. According to the IOC, the visit to the city of Dublin is going
"to shine a light on the rich heritage and sporting ambitions of Ireland, north and south". The Olympic torch will find itself shining in the city on the June 6th of the coming summer.
Lord Coe, who is the chairman of the LOCOG, expressed himself on the matter by giving the following statements: "We are delighted to be taking the Olympic Flame to Dublin on the morning of 6 June. This is an historic opportunity to showcase the wealth of
sporting talent from across the Republic of Ireland ahead of the competition at the London 2012 Olympic Games."
According to the route that has been planned out for the Olympic torch by the LOCOG, 95% of the population of the United Kingdom will come to within 10 miles of it. However, it will not be until later in 2012 that the street wise details of the route that
the Olympic torch would take will be made available.
The Olympic Games are taking place in the city of London for the third time in its history, making it the first city in the world to host the Games thrice.
