Olympic trial for British boxers
Young hopeful British boxers will get the opportunity to try out for a place in the Great Britain 2012 squad in a tournament that is set to be held at the Liverpool Echo arena.
Great Britain experienced a fantastic Olympics in 2008, notably in boxing in which a highly talented squad of seven boxers went to the games and came away with one gold and two bronze medals. This was a stark contrast to 2004 when just Amir Khan was sent over and since then the vast majority of the squad have embarked on professional careers with a great deal of success.
After the fine achievements of the class of 2008 and the fact that this next tournament will be on home soil, the GB squad has stepped up its efforts to get the best out of it resources and so these trials will take place for both male and female fighters from around the country.
This is a great opportunity for those fighters who haven’t been spotted by the GB squad or haven’t had the opportunity to be part of things before. How it will work is that the English, Scottish and Welsh amateur boxing associations will send in there top picks who will then compete against the current members of the GB podium team. It will work as a knockout tournament with the winners getting full assessment and funding from the Olympic committee.
This is a great step forward for British boxing another positive move after they decided to get rid of their disdain for the professional game and employed Rob McCracken as performance director.
McCracken has done a great job and said of this new tournament: "This will be a high quality competition that will provide a real test for the existing GB boxers and have an influence on the make-up of the Olympic squad as we move into 2011. It is an opportunity for all of the competitors to showcase their skills and stake a claim to be part of the team for 2012."
McCracken has done fantastic things with the squad so far, most notably a highly successful European championships.
This tournament is a fantastic way to make sure the GB squad is up to full wack and will take place on November 12-13th in front of what is likely to be a 6,000 crowd at the Liverpool Echo arena.
