Olympics Minister Hugh Robertson visits North East – London Olympics 2012
The United Kingdom Minister for the Olympic Games, Hugh Robertson, has recently visited North Easterners and tired to generate their enthusiasm to get them more involved in sports.
The people of the region were a little put down because of the fact that their sporting budget was cut this time around. However, the Olympics Minister stressed the point that the London 2012 Olympic Games has saved the region from experiencing a further
setback.
Robertson commented on the matter in the following words, “The Olympic Games are principally about sport, but it has also brought money directly to local businesses - either those who have been involved with construction projects or those who have been involved
in the operation of the Games. I hope it will bring huge dividends to the region, and when the Torch finally comes to the North East it will give people and businesses the opportunity to showcase everything the region has to offer and will drive tourism going
forward.”
The visit of Robertson was to celebrate the 200-day countdown until the Olympic Games that are scheduled to start from July 27 until August 12. The Minister for the Olympics made a visit to one of the sites that could be a training facility before the start
of the Games. This was the Durham County Cricket Club. The Minister for the Olympics made it a point that he met with the local school children in order to gauge the level of interest the international sporting event is generating among them. Not only that,
Robertson also went around to the Deerness Leisure Centre where he observed and also talked to some of the gymnasts present in training.
Before Robertson could call it a day, he was made aware of the plans that the Cricket Club had in place in the event that the Club is selected as one of the training facilities before the start of the Olympic Games.
The London 2012 Olympic Games has brought a lot of opportunities to the region and North East does not want to be the one to miss out on the experience.
