Olympics is not only about beating Great Britain: Kevin Tabotta
Kevin Tabotta, the Cycling Australian National Performance Director has told all his riders to be at their best during the coming Olympics and not to get swept up by the Great Britain versus Australia rivalry.
Both the teams are have numerous top-class riders and are definitely favourites to receive the top spot at the contest.
Coming fresh from the Tour de France victory, Team Great Britain is over the moon and is all set to make full use of the current form and the home turf advantage.
Mark Cavendish will try and restrict Matt Goss and Simon Gerrans in the men’s road race while Amanda Spratt and Chloe Hosking will challenge Nicole Cooke at the women’s race.
Tabotta told Herald Sun Great Britain, "There are no surprises that they will come out swinging in London with the best they have got," he said.
"The key is for [us] to come out with our best and whatever that returns at the end of the day, that is what we can do”.
"But if we concentrate on one team we are not concentrating on our own job, and some nations like Germany will be very competitive as you saw at the worlds”.
"The Olympic Games will provide a level of intensity that a world championships doesn't".
Great Britain currently holds the third overall position at the UCI World Tour Nations rankings with a total number of 1041 points to its credit.
Bradley Wiggins (601), Christopher Froome (266), Mark Cavendish (128), Ben Swift and Geraint Thomas (22) made the maximum contributions.
Spain is leading the category with 1136 point with Italy (1084) and Belgium (915) holding the second and the fourth positions respectively.
Team Australia is at the fifth position with 734 points after the UCI World Tour Nations ranking 2012.
Major contributions came through Simon Gerrans (210 points), Michael Rogers (194 points), Cadel Evans (182 points), Richie Porte (74 points) and Matthew Goss (74 points).
However, Team Australia topped the medal count in April with a total number of 15medals while Team Great Britain fell two medals behind at the second spot after the UCI Track World Championships.
It will be interesting to see how the British-Australian unfolds as the 2012 Olympics Games kicks-off on July 28th, 2012.
