Olympics silver medallist and IIHF gold medallist Saku Koivu to add another honour to his name
Former Montreal Canadiens captain and currently a player and alternative captain of Anaheim Ducks, Saku Koivu, will add another honour to his already much decorated achievements list as he will carry the torch and will have his name written in very special
torch bearers of Olympics Games.
The native of Turku, Finland will carry the torch on the 24th of July, just three days before the opening ceremony of the world’s most popular sports event. He will carry the torch and will run holding it through the city of London and will do
it until he will handover it to next torch bearer at London borough of Hillingdon, which is located some 25 miles away from the Olympics stadium where opening ceremony would be held.
Olympics torch and flame are actually the symbol of Olympic Games and it is a tradition which is being performed ever since the games started.
The 2012 Olympic Games torch was ignited in Greece, the home of the games, at the Temple of Hera, Olympia on 10th May 2012. It started its journey on 19th of the May and will reach London Olympics stadium on the eve of the games which
will take 70 days.
It would take 66 evening celebrations, 6 island’s visits and more than 8000 people to carry the torch to its destination, one of would be Saku Koivu.
But he is not the only ice hockey player to achieve this feat as Pittsburgh Penguins’ Sidney Crosby, former Montreal Canadiens, Washington Capitals, Vancouver Canucks’ New York Islander player Trevor Linden, former Vancouver Canucks’ player Stan Smyl were
all torch bearers while Wayne Gretzky served as cauldron lighter in 2010 Winter Olympics torch ceremony.
37-year-old old, veteran Finn ice hockey player has achieved a lot in his career since he started in 1992. He is a three time bronze medallist (1994, 1998, 2010) and one time silver medallist (2006) with Finland international hockey team in Winter Olympic
Games and one time bronze medallist (2008), twice a silver medallist (1994, 1999) and once a gold medalist (1995) in IIHF World Championships.
Whereas at NHL he has played more than 1000 games, scoring 236 goals and 540 assists and 776 points, playing for Montreal Canadiens for 13 seasons and three season with Anaheim Ducks.
