The Spanish international goalie is usually a very reliable customer in between the goal posts for Real Madrid but in this match he was particularly shaky in the first half as his mistake almost allowed Lyon to open the scoring within the first 30 minutes

Typically responsible on the night, the Portuguese center back marshaled Real Madrid’s back line with authority. It was his ability to sniff out danger and mark the speedy Gomis on the night which allowed Madrid to dominate the second half of their first
leg of the UEFA Champions League Round-of-16 match against Lyon at Stade Gerland.

Carvalho’s compatriot was sloppy in the first half as he gave away little fouls which allowed Lyon to dominate the first half of play against Real Madrid through various set pieces. came through the Portuguese national’s mistake as he failed to keep track of Gomis’ run inside the Real Madrid penalty area. Nonetheless, it was generally an average performance on the night by Pepe who must play better when Lyon come to Santiago Bernabeau
