Olympique Lyonnais Vs http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-de-Marseille-c40127: Match Analysis
In the first derby of the 2011/2012 French Ligue 1 campaign, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-Lyonnais-c40130 hosted Olympique de Marseille at the Stade Gerland. The final score was 2-0 to Lyon who now lead the Ligue 1 standings with 14 points from 5 games.
In a game where a good result was essential for Olympique de Marseille coach Didier Deschamps, Marseille never really did anything to prove their credentials against a Lyon side that was brimming with confidence.
Since Remi Garde has taken over the coaching position at Lyon, there is a feel good environment about the squad. The game against Marseille was going to be the game where Lyon fans and Remi Garde would get an idea about how far the team has come after a
forgettable 2010/2011 campaign.
Bafe Gomis has been criticised by fans and experts alike for never really helping the club since joining Les Gones from bitter rivals AS Saint-Etienne in 2009. Already, he has scored four goals in six games for the Rhone giants.
It was Gomis who opened scoring for the host side. A fleeting run by Brazilian http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michel-Bastos-c25461 down the left wing ended the Brazilian providing an inch-perfect pass to Gomis who needed no invitation as the Frenchman slotted the ball past Mandanda to give Lyon
a deserving lead in the 17th minute.
Maxime Gonalons is slowly realising his full potential in a Lyon shirt and the youngster provided a cutting pass to an on-song Michel Bastos who scored his first goal of the season for Lyon as Lyon took a 2-0 lead in the 29th minute.
In a surprising move, Didier Deschamps had chosen to leave Andre Ayew and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alou-Diarra-c5259 and Jeremy Morel started for Les Phoceens. The introduction of Ayew and Amalfitano gave new life to Marseille as they
did manage to create a few opportunities for Marseille.
Lucho Gonzalez got a great chance to pull one back for the visitors but the Argentine’s shot hit the outside of the post. A http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Mathieu-Valbuena-c24690 corner in the 78th minute was met by Loic Remy whose header was saved by Anthony Reveillere.
Lyon were far more impressive throughout the match and deserved to be the winners after the final whistle blew. For Olympique de Marseille, things are looking bleak as the club has failed to win a single game in Ligue 1 so far this season.
Man of the Match:
Michel Bastos was in great form out there for Remi Garde’s men and after being linked with a move away from the Stade Gerland throughout the entirety of the summer transfer window, the Brazilian pulled out an impressive display for Les Gones.
The winger was a living nightmare for Marseille right-back Azpilicueta in the first half. Though one can say that he was being excessively individual, but who could blame him for that after he was in such great form.
Lyon verdict
Les Gones have definitely found a great manager for the future in shape of Remi Garde. Being a Lyon man through and through, Garde has done extremely well by getting the best out of the same players who failed to perform last season. A good start has been
made by Lyon and one can only see the unit getting stronger with each passing week.
Marseille verdict
Two weeks ago, Deschamps denied that there was a crisis at the club. However, the Frenchman knows that the sirens are ringing and that he will have to do something quickly about it. With Marseille at the bottom of the Ligue 1 table, Deschamps might be getting
precariously close to becoming Ligue 1’s first managerial casualty this season.
