Stade de Gerland, Lyon saw seven-time Ligue 1 champions Olympique Lyonnais host Paris Saint-Germain in a Ligue 1 encounter that was one of the most anticipated games of this weekend. As promised, the game turned out to be an entertaining encounter.
However, words can certainly not describe the outcome of the game. No one would have expected the game to be such a close encounter that kept everyone on their feet.
Ahead of the game, PSG were yet to lose under Carlo Ancelotti. However, a win was important for the noveau riche of French football as Montpellier Herault won their game against Bordeaux 1-0 to go on top of the Ligue 1 standings.
Chasing a first Ligue 1 title since 1994, PSG were in for a tough time at the Rhone.
In a wide open game, there were a lot of chances for both sides. However, it was the visitors who opened scoring who side-footed the ball past Lyon goalkeeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jeremy-Menez-c18345 free-kick in the 21st minute.
At that stage, Lyon must have feared yet another Ligue 1 defeat which surely would have ended their hopes of playing in the Champions League next season.
France international, Bafetimbi Gomis had two great chances to level the game. However, the former AS Saint-Etienne striker made amends by equalising in the 34th minute. A http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Salvatore-Sirigu-c32282 by Gomis.
Two minutes later, Lyon were in dreamland when Lisandro Lopez scored through a Michel Bastos assist.
More was to come from the hosts. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michel-Bastos-c25461 netted a fantastic volley beyond Sirigu just before half-time to make it 3-1 to Lyon. The best defence in Ligue 1 had conceded three goals in a space of almost 10 minutes and was at sixes and sevens.
However, more twist was to come. Brazilian winger, Nene was bundled by Maxime Gonalons in the third minute of injury time. The former AS Monaco stepped up to take the penalty kick and coolly put the ball beyond Lloris to keep his side’s hopes alive. This
was Nene’s first goal away from home.
Twelve minutes after the start, Michel Bastos found http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Momo-c26769 Sissoko and headed the ball past Sirigu to make it 4-2 to Lyon.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Marcos-c23772 Ceara gave the travelling fans some hope when Hoarau’s cut-back was met by Ceara who easily converted the ball into the goal to make it 4-3.
With Lyon defence showing signs of shakiness, PSG laid a siege on Lloris’ goal. First it was http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Mathieu-Bodmer-c24679 who failed to find the back of the net.
However, once again, it was Guillaume Hoarau who was to be Ancelotti’s hero. The Frenchman rose above everyone to head the ball in the Lyon net to make it 4-4 just before the final whistle.
The result now means that Montpellier lead the Ligue 1 standings by a point while Lyon are provisionally in fifth place.
