Ligue 1 giants, Olympique Lyonnais have come at a pivotal point in their history. In the early 2000s, Lyon were the ogres of the Championnat. However, since their last triumph in the Championnat, Les Gones have lost a lot of weight.
Though the seven-time Ligue 1 champions remain a major force in Ligue 1, things have drastically changed and the fact is that Les Gones are no more guaranteed of big things.
Moreover, the club’s financial issues mean that Lyon would be hard-pressed to win silverware on a regular basis.
A place in the UEFA Champions League that used to be all in a day’s work, is no more a given for the residents of the Stade de Gerland. It is now the context of financial difficulties and to some extent sporting issues, president Jean-Michel Aulas is looking
to take the club’s relationships with UAE to the next level.
Already, Lyon have signed UAE international Hamdan Al-Kamali and now, the club is looking to go to the next level. Al-Kamali’s agent has also admitted that the move of the young defender has opened new avenues for both UAE and Lyon in every aspect.
Jean-Michel Aulas has also understood the message. The Lyon supremo is now looking to book a flight to UAE in order to have more discussions with the Sheikhs about a future partnership.
“I hope to meet the economic and political leaders of the country. If you have the possibility to enter into discussions with companies in these countries, you should utilise it. OL have shareholders who wish to remain (with the club) and expand. We are
not in the same search for partners like PSG.”
Aulas’ statements clearly mean that he is keen on improving the club’s relations with the Middle Eastern companies which would be massive for a club whose financial strength has significantly decreased in the last few years.
