Olympique Marseille President Jean Claude Dassier moots Didier Drogba return rumours
It is not surprising to see the name of French Ligue 1 club http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Didier-Drogba-c11044’s future is discussed. It has recently been suggested that the defending Premier League giants may offload the Ivorian in the upcoming transfer window. Many clubs would be interested in signing the talented striker and Olympique de Marseille are just one of the clubs that are being linked with the Ivorian.
OM president, Jean-Claude Dassier has been very careful indeed whenever asked about rumours linking Drogba to the club. Although the Ivorian spent just one season at the club before leaving for Stamford Bridge, he made a lasting impact on the Phoceens fans after scoring 19 goals for the club. The striker is still very much loved there and many fans would love to see the two-time African Player of the Year play at the Velodrome again.
Drogba’s return to the defending French Ligue 1 champions may be a fascinating dream for the Marseille supporters but it might never materialise. Club President, Jean-Claude Dassier has been very careful and shrewd while assessing the situation. Talking to the media, the former journalist pointed out to the fact Didier Drogba has become indispensable to the club in the final furlong of the season. The Ivorian has always made a bigger impact whenever he has replaced January signing from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809, Fernando Torres.
Dassier said, “Dreaming about Drogba’s arrival is one thing, it’s a totally other thing to have him playing for us next season.” It is a well-documented fact that the wages paid by top English Premier League clubs are not compatible with the economic policies and wage structure adopted by the biggest club in Ligue 1.
These circumstances might be enough to stop Marseille from dreaming about Drogba’s return. Dassier was very honest when he said that his club could not afford to buy a player whose wage demands are simply too much for the club. Dassier admitted that at the age of 33, Drogba is still in great shape.
“He is still like a young lad who pays attention to his life style and has maintained himself. I would love to see Drogba return to the club and it would be silly of me to say that the club is not interested in him,” added the President.
Dassier advised all Marseille fans to refrain from going into delirium. “The transfer window has not started. First let the league finish and then we will have a lot of time to see how to strengthen our side in accordance with our finances,” Dassier said.
The press conference was simply yet realistic and logical. Olympique de Marseille can dream all they like but financial constraints will keep Drogba’s return a dream and nothing more. Although Dassier has not put an end to the speculation, he has clarified and made it very clear that if circumstances do not support the club financially, there will be no return of Didier Drogba.
