Defending French Ligue 1 champions, Olympique de Marseille are reportedly keeping tabs on Jeremy Mathieu, who is currently on the books of Spanish la Liga side, Valencia. The reigning French champions are looking to add a new defender to their ranks and
have now set their sides on the 27-year-old.
According to French sports newspaper, L’Equipe, Les Phoceens are in the market for a new defender as current left-back, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Taye-Taiwo-c34728, would be leaving the Rhone giants after the end of the current campaign. The Nigerian will sign for Italian Serie A giants,
AC Milan, in the upcoming transfer window, leaving the left-back position at Marseille vacant.
Marseille might start negotiations with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899 in the
transfer window. Valencia would also be looking to sell the player for some amount rather than letting him go on a Bosman move next year.
Jeremy Mathieu started his professional career with Sochaux in 2002 and went on to make 86 appearances for the club and scored 10 goals in the process. The Frenchman then joined Toulouse on a four-year deal in the summer of 2005. Mathieu made a good start
to life at the Midi-Pyrenees club but after missing almost half of the season through injury and then seeing his team finish just one spot ahead of the relegation zone, the Frenchman started pondering on his future at the club. It was reported that the highly-rated
defender would join Serie A giants AS http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roma-c31603 in 2008 but Toulouse rebuffed the Italian club’s efforts to sign the player. The situation was further escalated when Toulouse reportedly rejected a 4.5 million Euros bid by Bordeaux for Mathieu.
The defender walked away from the club after his contract expired in 2009 and joined Valencia on June 10, 2009. Since then, the Frenchman has made 51 appearances for Los Che and has scored two goals. This season, Mathieu has made just 13 appearances for
Unai Emery’s side.
