In the French city of Marseille, some heroes of the 2009/2010 Championnat winning sides are living quite funny stories these days. First comes Lucho Gonzalez, a player who joined the club in the summer of 2009 from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Porto-c39186 for a record breaking transfer.
The Argentine’s first season at the Stade Velodrome was a great success as he guided the club to Ligue 1 glory. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Souleymane-Diawara-c33850 was also a vital clog of Didier Deschamps’ side that won the Championnat.
However, things have changed for the duo since then. In the 2010/2011 season, Gonzalez was criticised for not being able to command the midfield while Diawara was criticised for his weak defensive displays that according to some fans, led Lille to their
first Ligue 1 triumph in five decades.
This season, things have taken a bad shape for Gonzalez who after impressing in his first few games of the season, was given a new status as a substitute with Deschamps preferring http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Morgan-Amalfitano-c26799 instead.
Souleymane Diawara on the other hand, has fared better than his South American teammate. While talking to the media, President of the Rhone club, Vincent Labrune said, “Who is playing or not playing, this is not the priority today,” thus making it clear
that the club is willing to be a bit harsh on players in order to get a faltering season back on track.
However, after a complicated 2010/2011 campaign, Diawara has once again become an integral member of the squad. His recent displays have shown that although the 32-year-old has lost considerable pace, he can make up for it due to his vast experience and
ability.
The Senegalese knows that he will have to battle the likes of Stephane M’Bia and young signing from AS Monaco Nicolas N’Koulou for a place in the starting XI.
However, Diawara has proven his worth to the management and according to Le Parisien, the former Bordeaux has been offered a contract extension to which the veteran has agreed. The contract suggests that Diawara will say at the club until 2013 but will also
be given an additional year if he performs well. Reports suggest that the African player will earn more than he currently earns (2.4 million per year and 200,000 Euros per month), which is definitely a big risk taken by the Marseille management as the club
is already under a lot of financial stress.
