Reports in French media claim that Italian legend, Marcello Lippi is under the watchful eye of Olympique de Marseille management.
It has been reported that current coach, Didier Deschamps may walk out of the club if Marseille fail to qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season. Les Phoceens are currently in 8th place in the Ligue 1 standings and trail third-placed
LOSC Lille by eight points.
Keeping in view the club’s current form, it seems that missing out on the UCL next season seems inevitable. Deschamps has been at Marseille for almost three years during which he has won Ligue 1, Trophée des Champions (twice) and Coupe de La Ligue (twice),
However, the former Juventus manager is growing tired of the club’s inability to become a major force in terms of attracting big name players. Recent financial circumstances have forced president Vincent Labrune to adopt an austerity plan which though Deschamps
agree with, does not really want to be a part of.
Marseille are now looking to find a replacement for Deschamps if he leaves by the end of the campaign.
Marcello Lippi, who is currently the manager of Republic of Ireland, has been touted as a possible replacement for the former World Cup winner.
The 63-year-old Italian tactician is considered as one of the greatest managers of the game and has been successful in Europe and in the Serie A with the likes of Juventus and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Inter-c39567 Milan. Furthermore, the Viareggio-born man also guided Italy to a World
Cup success back in 2006 which makes him more than just a good replacement for Deschamps.
It remains to be seen whether Marseille would be able to afford the maestro who will settle for nothing less than a contract worth 10 million Euros a year.
Evergrande, owners of Chinese side Guangzhou are willing to give that much to Lippi which makes things complicated for Les Phoceens.
Furthermore, Lippi could also refuse Marseille’s offer. The Italian wants to take a national side to the World Cup in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Brazil-c2858 and would give that task top priority.
“I dream of being a manager of a national side. I will not work in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Italy-c2926 anymore. Now, I dream of guiding a team to the World Cup in Brazil,” said the manager while talking to media last November.
Lippi will be guiding the Irish national team to the Euro 2012 which means that Marseille will have to wait for the tournament to end before making a decision.
