After failing to qualify for the Champions League, Olympique de Marseille might see departures of many players. However, Jose Anigo says that a player exodus will not happen
Since late January, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-de-Marseille-c40127 have failed to win a single game in Ligue 1. Last night’s 1-1 draw against a cocky Caen side has now put Les Phoceens in tenth place in Ligue 1 standings.
Even if they do manage to win every single game till the end of the campaign, Didier Deschamps’ side will struggle to even secure a Europa League berth, let alone a Champions League berth. Failing to qualify for the Champions League will have serious repercussions
the most evident of which would be losing star players.
Already, the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Steve-Mandanda-c34177, Mathieu Valbuena, Andre Ayew, Loic Remy and Cesar Azpilicueta have been linked with moves away from Stade Velodrome.
Though Les Phoceens have won the Coupe de la Ligue which guarantees them of a place in Europa League next season, Champions League remains the ultimate objective for Marseille every season and most players join the club for that very reason.
Furthermore, after having experienced the heights of UCL, many Marseille players would want to remain in the competition and will look for clubs that can offer them this.
However, despite all those insecurities, sporting director Jose Anigo is adamant that there will be a massive player exodus in the upcoming summer transfer window.
While giving an interview to Le 10 sport, Anigo said that the transfer window will not be a restless one and added that players who have long-term contracts are expected to respect them.
“It will not be a restless transfer window. It will be a transfer window like any other. Players have contracts and they respect them. The club will decide which players will leave and which players they keep. Without Champions League, it may be more complicated
financially but I trust the president. He is smart enough to find resources.”
His comments are certainly far from utopian because the likes of Loic Remy and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Mathieu-Valbuena-c24690 have already said that they are looking to stay at the club for at least another year.
