Olympus FE-280 Digital Camera- Have i wiped the memory card?

I had a lot of lovely photos in my Olympus FE-280 camera. I plugged the camera into the computer with the cord, and selected PC on the camera screen. The Olympus Master window was open. The stage was set! I have pressed transfer images from camera. It says that the device is not ready. Now nothing has happened. And when I unplugged the camera and attempted to turn it on, it tells me to clean the memory card (which I have done). When trying to access the memory card via the My Computer icon it tells me to format the memory card, and that all data will be wiped if I do so. What has happened? Is there anything I can do?? Please please help me.

See if you your sd card can be read by a card reader.
