  2. I have both a Canon and Olympus E510.

The E510 use's 4/3"  sensor designed from the ground up for Digital,  (including Lecia and Panasonic) compared to older SLR systems. All 4/3 lens have a Telecentric designs which means the light from the lens hits the 4/3 sensor at the optimal angle providing Fringe-free results with good image quality.

The Canon 450D is a great DSLR, but its been let down slightly,  as the kit lens supplied show softness around the edges.

    Good points  (e510)

4/3 system , means smaller size DSLR and Lens

All lens have x2 equvilent  to 35mm (30-90mm) = 60 to 180mm on the olympus.

Image Stablisation in the Body, so all lens attached become stablised.

    Bad points

4/3 sensor smaller than the Cannon Cmos sensor which means more image noise at images over iso 400+ . The 450D has good noise control up to iso 800-1600

only 3 AF points compared to the 450d 9 AF

Burst speed  during Continues Shooting is lower than the 450D

    smaller LCD screen 2.5"  (3.0" on 450D)

    10mp (12mp 450d)

The Canon 450D does produce better images, if you get yourself a good quality lens.

might want to go into the store and have a look and feel of both DSLR to see which one suits your needs.

Both  are good DSLR i use both the e500 and my 20d
