Omar Minaya assumes charge of San Diego Padres – MLB News
The San Diego Padres made an important move on Friday, December 2 by hiring Omar Minaya as the senior vice president of baseball operations. Minaya, who had previously served as an analyst for Major League Baseball, will now serve as the VP of the baseball
operations for the club.
Also, Minaya had remained the former manager of the New York Mets and Expos. By assuming this new charge, he will now have the same role which general manager Josh Byrnes had.
The change of role will indeed be welcome news for Minaya himself. While commentary and analyzing the game were essentially parts of baseball, being actively involved in a team’s affair is indeed a challenge that Minaya wanted to accept at this crucial juncture.
He was of the view that while commenting was fun, it could not be a competition, something that he has missed. "It was a way of staying on top of what was going on in the game and an opportunity to see the other side of the game," Minaya said of his time
with MLB.com. "Analyzing is fun, but nothing is more fun than being a competitor.”
Going back to recent past, it was in 2010 that the New York Mets had dismissed Minaya as their general manager which brought him in the game as an analyst and a commentator for MLB.
His new charge will be essentially different from that of a general manager. The current team will like to have him placed on handling the responsibility in overlooking the affairs of San Diego.
Byrnes, who was previously vice president of the baseball operations referred to the same possibility. "He's probably going to do a lot of what I did last year," Byrnes said. "He's going to be a sounding board to the general manager.”
With the new charge that Minaya has received, it remains to be seen how he, through the experience of past, brings about changes in his new team in the capacity of vice president. It will be interesting to see what impact Minaya has for the Padres during
the 2012 regular season.
