Omar Minaya undecided about his baseball role in 2011
The former New York Mets General Manager Omar Minaya has still not decided what he wants to do in 2011.
He wants to be part of baseball but there is no word on what exactly he is looking to do. March is supposedly his decision making deadline but no update is available for the time being.
The Arizona Diamondbacks made a move for Minaya in November 2010 when they offered him a special advisor position to the General Manager. At that time, the General Manager Kevin Towers discussed the position openly and went on to tell the media about his
offer to the veteran figure.
“Omar and I talked about bringing him on board when he's ready, but I didn't receive any inclination through our conversation that he is ready to go back to work yet. Maybe in the spring was my sense,” Towers told the press in a text message.
With the Arizona D-Backs hot in pursuit, the New York Mets have not given up on Minaya in any way either. Though they have taken him out of the General Manager’s post, there is still a role waiting for the veteran. He has also been offered a similar position
that the D-Backs have offered him. Mets owner Fred Wilpon has iterated that and is looking forward to Minaya’s return.
Mets’ new General Manager, Sandy Alderson met Minaya in January and though there are no details on what was discussed, Alderson was able to comment on the situation.
“Psychologically, emotionally, he's got a lot invested here (with) the position he had over all of those years,” Alderson said. “Coming back and interacting with many of the same people in a different capacity is a change. I think anybody would need some
time (to) adjust to that. I don't think you should read into anything that's happened so far,” said Alderson.
Sandy had gone on to say that the situation was a consequence of a transitional phase and anyone in Minaya’s position would need time and space to figure things out.
Now with the baseball season dawning on the calendar, the real question is whether Minaya is able to attract enough attention by March before the regular season kicks off.
