Omar Pinzon wins Men’s 200m backstroke prelims: Day four – 2012 NC Charlotte UltraSwim
Omar Pinzon of Trojan Swim Club won the preliminary rounds of Men’s 200m backstroke on concluding day of the 2012 NC Charlotte UltraSwim at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in Charlotte on Sunday, May 13.
The 22-year-old Pinzon went on a rampage in the four-lap backstroke discipline and made his way into the final round as strong contender for the title.
With his invincible efforts, he remained considerably ahead of his challengers from the start and cruised his way to the finishing wall for first position by submitting a time of 1 minute and 58.35 seconds.
His scintillating effort was trailed by Preston Jenkins of Bolles School-FL, who remained almost four seconds slower and clocked a time of 2 minutes and 02.02 seconds for second position.
Jenkins was chased by Eugene Godsoe of SwimMAC Carolina, who stayed only 0.02 seconds apart and tapped the finishing wall for third best qualification spot by reporting a time of 2 minutes and 02.04 seconds.
Fourth best qualifying spot of the race was obtained by Jenkins’s teammate, Ryan Murphy, who remained 0.35 seconds away from his preceding swimmer and posted a time of 2 minutes and 02.39 seconds.
Meanwhile, the crowd experienced forceful efforts of Nick Thoman of SwimMAC Carolina, who remained just 0.48 seconds slower from upsetting his foregoing finisher and settled on the finishing wall for fifth position with an effort of 2 minutes and 02.87 seconds.
The 26-year-old Thoman was chased by Connor Green of Bluefish Swim-NE, who proved his eligibility for sixth finest qualification spot of the event with the timing of 2 minutes and 03.77 seconds.
Green was chased by Kyle Owens of Auburn Univ-SE, who remained 0.12 seconds slower and posted 2 minutes and 03.89 seconds for seventh position.
The 21-year-old Owens was chased by Robert Bollier of Unattached-PC, who ended his swim in eighth place by producing a time of 2 minutes and 04.74 seconds.
The arena appreciated gruelling efforts of all swimmers in the preliminary rounds while top three finishers in the playoff will be awarded medals and accolades for their fascinating efforts at the medal ceremony.
