Omar Uresti takes opening-round lead at the United Leasing Championship
Omar Uresti fired a bogey-free seven-under par 65 in the opening round of the United Leasing Championship, to enjoy a two-stroke lead over Martin Piller, Lee Janzen and David Lingmerth, on Thursday, June 28, 2012.
Uresti started off his round on the back nine of the Victoria National Golf Club and carded a birdie on the very first hole (10th) that he played.
Three consecutive birdies, starting from the 13th hole, allowed him to go four-under early in the round.
Through 14 holes, he was tied for the top position on the leaderboard. He took the sole lead through consecutive birdies on the final two holes of the day.
He looked really happy, especially after getting such a good start on the Web.com Tour, formerly known as Nationwide Tour.
According to him, it can be a turning point for him in the season, as he missed the cuts in six of the 10 appearances on the 2012 Nationwide Tour so far. His best finish of the season came in the Chitimacha Louisiana Open, when he tied for the 10th position.
Therefore, he now has the chance of improving his track record on the tour while becoming the first winner at the inaugural edition of the tournament.
He told that the course conditions were really difficult to play on and it was almost necessary to hit the ball straight in order to get a good score.
"It was difficult out there. You have to hit the ball straight and by no means it is an easy golf course. It was also nice to make some putts," Uresti stated. "To get around in 7-under on this course, I'm really happy. It's nice to be one of those guys that
puts that number up".
He is hoping to record another good round on Friday to enter the weekend with a strong position on the leaderboard.
Alistair Presnell and Tag Ridings shared the fifth place after carding a four-under par 68 each. Will MacKenzie, the former PGA Tour player, was listed among eight other players to tie for the seventh position, with a three-under par 69.
