Omega Dubai Desert Classic: Updates from round one
The Omega Dubai Desert Classic is underway at the Emirates Golf Club with a star-stellar field. Here is a quick glance at the first round leaderboard.
The Northern Irish star Rory McIlroy is in temporary lead. The winner of 2009 Dubai Desert Classic smashed a score of 7-under-par helped by eight birdies against one bogey in early conditions.
He was chased by Sergio Garcia. The Spaniard teed off from the back and reeled a blemish-free scorecard with five birdies.
One stroke below stood a trio of Jean-Baptiste Gonnet, Danny Willett and Steve Webster who collectively had a score of four-under-par. Danny was the only player in the first group to fire an eagle on the par-5 18th hole.
Meanwhile, Eduardo Molinari and Miguel Angel Jimenez were seen struggling against the wind on undulating fairways. Molinari teed from the back but failed to impress the crowd as he could only carve two bogeys against one birdie. He tried changing his game
plan on the front and as a result, reeled two consecutive birdies on the opening holes. Soon after, he dropped one more shot and settled at par.
Jimenez also took a similar start. The Spaniard picked three points in the back but encountered two double-bogeys on the sixth and ninth hole which destroyed his overall scorecard.
Tiger Woods teed off in early conditions but could not take any advantage. He bogeyed the opening hole before picking up a 6-foot long birdie at the sixth hole. However, he performed considerably well on the back where he sandwiched one bogey between three
birdies. The former world number one is one-over-par after fifteen holes, which means he has a margin of three more holes.
Woods is at the third spot in the Official World Golf Rankings and if he manages to win the tournament, he will climb to second place which is currently occupied by Martin Kaymer of Germany.
Meanwhile, Kaymer is two-under after sixteen holes. The winner of Abu Dhabi Golf Championship birdied three holes before encountering a double-bogey at the closing hole of the front. He picked up a point on the back after carving two birdies against a bogey.
