Omega to continue sponsorship of the European Masters
In a recent announcement, OMEGA reaffirmed its standing on sponsoring the European Masters until 2017.
European Masters is the oldest and the most prestigious golf event on the European Tour. OMEGA became the title sponsor in 2001 and has been a major force behind the event.
European Masters started out as a minor event on the Swiss golf circuit. It grew in stature as one of the premier golf tournaments of the region. It truly occupied its current standing when it was co-sanctioned by the Asian and European golf tours.
OMEGA president Stephen Urquhart said, “We are proud to sponsor such an esteemed and important tournament, and all of us at OMEGA look forward to having top players from around the world play golf in our beautiful home country”.
“OMEGA’s continued role as title sponsor of the European Masters further establishes our brand as a driving force in golf, which is also supported by our partnership with The PGA of America and the forthcoming Ryder Cup in the US”.
The event is still held in the beautiful Swiss village of Crans-Montana. The tournament attracts the best golfers from all over Europe. Recently, players from Asia have made their appearance at the event, making it a truly international event.
The OMEGA European Masters could trace its roots to a small event named Swiss Open in 1923. The tournament underwent several changes of sponsors and OMEGA is the latest on the list. The event has grown into a major event on the European golf calendar.
The tournament is held at the end of August and continues until the first few days of September. This year the tournament will start on August 30 and the last round will be played on September 2.
This year the line-up of the tournament bears witness to the efforts of OMEGA in bringing the best golfers to the entry list of the event. All the top names in the men’s golf world have announced their availability for the event.
The defending champion of the event is Thomas Bjørn from Denmark. He won by a 4-stroke lead over Germany’s Martin Kaymer.
