  1. Find out where they are coming from.  There is usually some forgotten rotting fruit or vegetables somewhere, of even in the garbage.  Find it and take it outside.  That will get rid of most of them.

They won't be interested in your mac and cheese.

  2. I dislike fruit flies as well and after researching tried some homemade traps. I took about 3 oz of Balsamic vinegar or you can use red wine (I’ve never used wine) and put it in any throwable empty container (I used an empty Dannon yogurt plastic container -  http://bakingbites.com/wp-content/upload... I took a small piece of foil and folded it into a bowl shape so that I could place a half slice of appricot (any fruit) in it. The fruit is to attract the fruit flies! I placed this in the middle of the container in the balsamic vinegar. I then covered the container with saran wrap and put a strong rubber band around it so that I could drill some holes with my mechanical pencil. The saran wrap must be very tight on the container so that you can easily drill holes with the mechanical pencil. Place the holes at every half inch so that you can let the fruit flies in. The trick is that they figure their way in but 95% of the time are trapped and can't get back out. There are some older fruit flies that surface at the top so i slightly hit on the wrap so that they fall on the vinegar and they usually die there. I left this in my kitchen for a week and the fruit flies were 95% all gone just 2-3 old ones survive (even out of the trap) and I tried to kill them by using a magazine! On the internet people had also suggested putting water in a Ziploc bag and placing them on top of the garbage can, etc but that didn’t work for me.
