  1. Inhale, now exhale and repeat after me, "College is going to be fabulous!"  Alright, as cheesy as that was, I'm telling you the truth.  You are going to love college.  Yes, it is a big change from high school, and yes, change can be scary, but I assure you that this kind of change will be welcomed.  You'll see what I mean after the first day.  You are given so much more freedom in college.  Your professors finally treat you like the adult you are.

Your first day will not be as overwhelming as you think.  You will go to your classes and you will sit anywhere you want.  The professor will hand out a syllabus, which is like a semester long course schedule that will highlight all of the material that will be covered during the course, the due dates for assignment, what days you can expect your quizzes/tests, and how you will be graded.  He/she will probably do a role call or send around a piece of paper that you sign your name for attendance.  This will probably be the only time he/she takes attendance.  This is just to find out who actually showed up the first day.  After that, he/she won't care, because it is YOUR responsibility to go to class- they will not call your parents if you do not show up!

Making friends on campus will be a lot easier if you find people that you already have things in common with, and you'll know who you have things in common with by joining on campus clubs and organizations.  I recommend that you join one that is associated with your intended major and one that is just for fun.  For example, I majored in Psychology and joined the Psychology club.  I had a big interest in womens' rights, so I joined the Women's Studies club too.  I met a lot of friends this way.

Take advantage of every opportunity that you can.  See your professors once a week or every couple of weeks during their office hours- go over your notes and course lectures- things that made a lot of sense, things you were unsure of, etc.  This will help you get to know your professors one-on-one and will help make sure you understand the material.  See the tutors at the first sign of trouble- do not wait until the day before the exam.  The tutors are usually students that just finished the course the semester prior to you taking it- so it's still fresh for them and they're closer to your age, so it's easier to deal with them.

College parties- yes, they're fun, but limit them to just the weekends.  It is nearly impossible to retain any information in class if you are still intoxicated or hungover!

Just hold your head high, be proud of your accomplishment thus far and KNOW that you WILL be fine!

  2. I felt like that the first time I went away to school. It will pass.

    Tips?

Don't buy textbooks at the campus bookstore if you can help it (it's probably too late for this semester, but keep it in the back of your mind.) The markup college bookstores charge is obscene. Find out what the text will be as early as possible and get it used from Amazon.com. You'll pay half of what everyone else does, and when you're done with the book you can re-sell it on Amazon. I recommend Amazon because I've never had a bad experience with them. And most professors will let you use last year's edition.

Make your studies your priority for the first year. That will set the tone for the rest of college. Ask for help if you're having trouble with a particular subject. Don't cheat, no matter who else is doing it and what grades they're getting. They will be exposed in the workplace, and fired when it becomes obvious they never did the work necessary to learn.

Try not to cut class. That was a big temptation for me. Train yourself to show up and discipline yourself to a study schedule.

Don't binge drink. Don't listen to women who say men are all potential rapists, but never get yourself in a vulnerable position by getting drunk out of your mind or doing any other unsafe thing. You are responsible for keeping yourself safe as best you can. Use common sense.

We all survive college. Work hard and I wish you the best of luck. College is a wonderful place for you to find out just how capable you really are :)

  3. you will do fine just make sure you go to class most of the time and if you start to fall behind talk with your professors...once you get adjusted to doing the college work you will do fine

  4. To begin, don't worry about it!  Millions of students annually begin college and everyone (or almost everyone) freaks out to some extent in the beginning but turn out okay.  You'll definitely be alright if you want to do well in college.  Here are my tips:

1.)  Figure out your priorities.  Are you there to study?  To party?  To figure out what you're going to do with your life?  Whatever your aim for being in college is, don't forget it!

2.)  Make friends.  College is a great time to meet many amazing people and have amazing experiences.  Even if you're a recluse, you want to make more friends while at college.

3.)  Have fun!  College is a fun time, and while sometimes you may be overstressed, you will ultimately enjoy college.

    Good luck!

  5. Well if you dont worry yourself, you should be fine. Just stay focus on your major, dont rule out having fun... just dont have fun to the point where you wouldnt want to get back to your work. Uh... I heard its basically like high school besides your living on your own, and students are way more mature.

  6. You will be fine. I am in my 50's and am a Senior at UNF. Yeah, at 50. If I can do it and be good at it I am sure you will be fine! Get to class ontime, study hard and have fun.

  7. I'm in my third year of college and 23. I'm nervous too! :)

Tips: Be to class early and get a good seat because sometimes people are adding the class and you won't find a seat. Keep organized and find a datebook that gives you space to write everything done. Take good notes and come to class through all sessions.

If you haven't already, go to the bookstore and check what textbooks you need for each class. Take down the ISBN numbers and you might want to look on half.com to buy them cheaper and have them be sent to you ASAP.

You will do fine because nervousness usually translates into being excited and wanting to do well in school. If you need anything else, don't hesistate to ask me. I'm here to help! I know how crazy things can be with school starting. :)

    GOOD luck!

  8. Im in the same position and im totally freaked out.

Just keep thinking that It will be okay, and be confident :)

  9. I'm about to start my sophomore year at college. I was just as scared as you last year.  Don't worry though, most people are just as scared! Try to be outgoing and friendly.  Meeting new people will help you feel more at home (if you're living on campus) and will help the transition to school.  Have fun! and study hard!
