  1. I am sorry for you being taken in by the criminals that are scamming people of their hard-earned savings. And you are right...I am a bit surprised that the Omni Hotel chain has not taken the initiative to at least post on their website a warning to people to watch out for this scam. I looked at their news releases and there is absolutely no mention of Rose and her little Nigerian friends.

However, keep in mind that this scam has been going on for several months and Yahoo! people have been very quick to answer people posting about this problem. It's been asked at least thirty times that I can recall. Just do a search for "hotel job offer" and see.

This type of email offering a job and pretending to be the Omni Hotel or the Plaza Hotel is called "phishing". They pretend to be someone that they are not in order to trick you in sending them confidential information or getting you to freely send them money. Once they have what they need from you, they disappear into the night and open up again under a new email address.

Phishing is a major problem in USA and Canada, with scammers sending people emails that look like they came from Paypal, eBay, or even from some of our major banks. They claim that your account is invalid (or out of date, or has been hacked) and that you need to use the attached link to log in and fix the problem. NEVER click on that link or try to log in using a supplied URL in these messages!

Two big clues that people should think about before sending any emails or cash back to these scam artists.

    1) Most reputable businesses will NOT send out spam emails to people offering jobs or free money. If you are interested in jobs with that hotel, go to their official website and see what is offered.

    2) No offense to Yahoo! or other online engines, but reputable companies will not use an email account with Yahoo!, Gmail, MSN, or similar "free" email service. They have their own domain (example: Omni Hotels is actually "omnihotels.com") and that is where they would ask people to send their emails to, or they would ask you to use the "Contact Us" form.

At this point, I can only suggest that you learn from the experience and be more careful the next time. And you did the right thing to let everyone know about your unpleasant event. One other thing to suggest would be to inform Yahoo! Canada about the account so that they can either close it down or get the police involved.

The police site below may give you more information on known scams that are happening in Canada and around the world.
