On Amtrak trains are the roomette beds big enough for a parent & child to sleep in together?

Depends on the physical size of both persons.   Think small single bed.

They really are too narrow for a parent and child. I find them narrow with just me in them. But remember a roomette has two beds (upper and lower) so you could take the top bunk and the kid the lower bunk.

It can be done, but it will be tight.

In a Superliner Roomette, the lower bed is 2'4" wide by 6'6" long.  The upper bed is 2' wide by 6'2" long.

Take a tape measure and mark those dimensions with a bit of tape on your bed at home and try it.
