On Fire Baby turned in her third work ahead of the Kentucky Oaks
The 3-year-old Anita Cauley owned filly, On Fire Baby, turned in her third workout ahead of the Grade 1, $1 million Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs on 4 May, 2012, after her stunning performance in the Grade 3 Honeybee Stakes at Oaklawn Park on 10 March,
2012.
Jockey Joe Johnson has been aboard the filly throughout her career, and on her seven furlong breeze at Churchill Downs on 27 April, 2012, Joe Johnson was aboard the filly again as they covered the distance in 1 minute and 27 seconds flat.
Trained by Gary Hartlage, the 3-year-old filly’s work was recorded in fractional splits as she covered the quarter mile in 24 4/5 seconds, and took 37 3/5 seconds, 50 2/5 seconds to down the half mile distance and further she took 1 minute and 2 4/5 seconds
and 1 minute and 14 4/5 seconds to cover six furlongs as she further went on to gallop out a mile in 1 minute and 40 3/5 seconds.
It was a thorough work for On Fire Baby, who is one of the leading contenders to win the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks.
Initially, the daughter of Smoke Glacken was pointed to take part in Oaklawn Park’s Grade 2 Fantasy Stakes, which is considered as a top 3-year-old filly race, and if she had gone on to run in that race, she was then thought of running in the Grade 1, $1
million Arkansas Derby also at Oaklawn Park, where she would have faced males.
Instead, Gary Hartlage decided to keep her off racing, and concentrate on training for her ultimate spring/summer goal at Churchill Downs, the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks.
Prior to the win in the Grade 3 Honeybee Stakes, On Fire Baby was coming off a third place finish in the Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park.
Going over a distance of 1 mile, out of Gilded Time mare Ornate, On Fire Baby finished third to winner, Junebugred, on 16 January, 2012, as the winner covered the 1 mile distance in 1 minute and 38.45 seconds, as Reckless Jerry finished ahead of On Fire
Baby in second place.
