On Form 1-90, does Part 3 apply to me?

My grandmother's permanent residency is expiring, and I am filling out form I-90 for its renewal. However, I'm having some trouble with Part 3. It asks:

"If you entered the U.S. with an Immigrant Visa, also complete the following:

1) Destination in US at time of Admission:

2) Port of Entry Where Admitted to US:"

Although I know how to answer questions 1 and 2, she's not sure whether I entered with an "Immigrant Visa" or not. She applied for a passport in Mexico, but nothing more.

Does a passport count as an Immigrant Visa?

I guess the real question is,

By applying for a passport, does she automatically receive the Immigrant Visa? (What the heck IS that?)

If she doesn't, should I still fill out Part 3?

  1. Ask your abuelita if she went to a U.S. visa office in Mexico with her passport and applied for an immigrant visa. Ask her if anyone like a brother or sister or some other relative put in papers for her to come to the U.S. If she remembers something like that happening, she came as a new immigrant.

Look at her green card. Find the classification on the front where her photo is.

It should have letters and numbers, like IR-5, P3-1 or F2-1. Something looking like that. If the card shows a classification with a number from 1 to 5, she entered with an immigrant visa. If the number is 6 to zero, she adjusted status from a temporary classification to permanent resident.

Part three of the I-90 wants to know if she was a new immigrant or if she adjusted status.
