An H1B visa holder may travel and reenter the country during the validity period of the visa.

If you adjusted status to H1b through USCIS while in the US and you do not have a valid H1b visa, then you would need to get an H1b visa before you would be allowed to return to the US. The same would be true if you had an  H1b visa and it expired.  If you have an H1b visa, you can travel freely in and out of the US, as you could on any other visa. I'm assuming you wouldn't have asked this question, if you already had an H1b visa in your passport.
